Breaking News: The Real Reasons Behind Justin Trudeau and Sophie's Heartbreaking Split
The pair had previously openly disclosed their relationship's difficulties and had been spotted together less frequently in recent years.
Trudeau's election as Prime Minister in 2015 was one of his most difficult personal difficulties, especially given his emphasis on family life.
The pair made their statement just a week after Trudeau proposed a big Cabinet shuffle to bolster his Liberal Party's fortunes in the elections. Allies said he is determined to lead the progressives in the next elections, which are scheduled for October 2025.
Trudeau announced on Instagram, "Sophie and I want to share with you that after many meaningful conversations and some recent difficult discussions, we have decided to separate." Gregoire Trudeau sent a similar statement on Instagram.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said that Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, one of Trudeau's closest allies, would tell Cabinet members about the separation later Wednesday.
According to Trudeau's office, both of them have signed a formal agreement focusing on their children's well-being. During the next week of vacation, they intend to spend time together as a family.
Due to the sensitivity of the issue, a person acquainted with the situation requested anonymity and stated that the couple will maintain separate residences in Ottawa, but will spend significant time with the children at their official residence, Rideau Cottage, to ensure a stable upbringing.
Gregoire Trudeau met Trudeau in 2003 while studying commerce at university and working as a reporter. They married two years later.
Trudeau was only 43 when he became Prime Minister at the end of 2015, and the dynamic couple immediately drew international notice.
In October 2015, The New York Post called her "the hottest first lady in the world."
In its January 2016 issue, Vogue magazine included a gorgeous profile of the couple, complete with photographs of them hugging. In a lengthy piece, the magazine stated that Trudeau "surprises some people with his very public displays of affection for his wife."
During his first years as Prime Minister, he and Sophie were frequently seen together at social gatherings and on international tours. During their trip to India in February 2018, they were seen sporting colorful clothing on most days, which generated disparaging comments back home.
However, even before becoming Prime Minister, Trudeau made it apparent that their relationship had difficulties, stating in his 2014 autobiography "Common Ground" that "our marriage isn't perfect, and we face difficulties between us."
Gregoire Trudeau has curtailed her public appearances with her husband in recent years, and symptoms of friction have emerged.
Last year, on their wedding anniversary, she said on social media, "We've weathered sunny days, storms, and everything in between, and it isn't over yet."
"Long-term relationships can be challenging in many ways," she continued.
They were seen together in London in May for King Charles' coronation and again when US President Joe Biden visited in late March.
