Altina was born on August 4, 1907, in Manhattan, New York. She studied there till high school and then traveled to Paris to study painting. It wasn't until he arrived in Paris that he decided to try something new. After completing his studies in Paris, he returned to New York and enrolled in The Art Students League, where he honed his skills.
Altina worked as a window dresser for numerous Fifth Avenue stores in New York. During this time, he had the opportunity to work with notable painters such as Salvador Dali and George Grosz.
